African Art: The Years Since 1920
In its painting and sculpture since 1920, African art has combined elements from traditional tribal and modern European art. This is one of the first books to explore this fascinating and crucial development. Concentrating on the period from 1920 to 1965, but pointing up more recent trends in his new introduction, Marshall Mount discusses specific style motifs, as well as ways of handling sculptural forms and surfaces, most of which are drawn from the older art. He then shows how this substratum has been shaped by the techniques, media, styles, and philosophy of Western art. As the pattern of African art has shifted from one based on religion, custom, and ceremony to the Western ideal of art for the sake of art, our understanding and appreciation must make a comparable change. This book will help anyone to reappraise the diverse and exciting—and still largely unrecognized-world taking shape in African art today.

(from the book) Marshall W. Mount, who received his Ph.D. in Art History from Columbia University, did research for this book throughout sub-Saharan Africa as a recipient of two Rockefeller Foundation grants. Dr. Mount served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Art History at both Finch College in New York City and the University of Benin in Benin City, Nigeria. He has written on contemporary and traditional African art for Archaeology, Antiquity, and African Arts, and now teaches art history at the Fashion Institute of Technology of the State University of New York.
